Fear Not Fest

Ok, here are the basics:
Oct 27 from 6-9
1st-5th graders only
VBS style--kids broken into groups with leaders, rotating around to different stations

Stations (15 min apiece):
  • 5 rooms (gathering room counts as one) upstairs Capernaum center will be the storytelling area that serves as an alternative to a haunted house. Each room will have a different character (dressed) telling his/her story of overcoming fear by trusting in God. Rooms are decorated to look like the event (e.g. Joseph is inside of the well/pit his brothers put him in); characters pass out candy or prize to kid to represent overcoming fear (Trusting God can replace your fear with laughing--Snickers)
  • Room for game
  • Room for craft
  • Area for food and carnival type games
Storytelling rooms will be themed as follows: 1. Joseph in the pit 2. Daniel in the Lions' Den 3. Esther going before the King 4. Jonah in the whale 5. Cemetery--Who rolled the stone away?

Game will be "Fear Not--The Lord is with you." It's just like Marco Polo but you say Fear Not, and the other people say the latter.

Craft, if we can figure out how to do it, will be to make night lights to go along with 2 Samuel 22:29

Obstacles
  • Visions is doing their fall festival until 6:30 in the gym; They said we can use their stuff if we want (bean bag throw etc), but if we need the gym, we're either going to have to use their stuff or tear it down and put ours up fast. I'm almost thinking we should just avoid the gym and have our stuff in one bldg.
  • We'll only have 1 week to decorate the upstairs rooms because of SS (from Sunday after church through Friday morning). Fellowship hall is reserved all day on Friday.

Things to Think About for the Meeting on the 15th:
  • We need a person to head up each storytelling room (5 people)-- gathering storytellers, planning the decoration of it, getting a team together to make it happen
  • We need a game point person to get a team together (think like we did at BTSW)
  • We need a craft point person to get a team together (ditto)
  • We need a food person who has been to the training to get food together (Carol Ehrman will be a consultant, but she's overwhelmed and would prefer to train someone than to put it all together herself. She'll help you know how much, where, and what to order
  • we need 2 Carnival Game point persons to recruit a team to volunteer and to come up with theme based games (David slingshot game, Jericho wall tumble, etc.)
  • we will need childcare for K and under (maybe show Rack Shack and Benny or Jonah)
  • we need a detailed person to be in charge of the "VBS" type groups and scheduling the rotations
That's 12 people, folks, and miraculously, that's how many people we have on our CFM team, so pick one that you'd like to do. First come, first served. One exception: Nancy will be in near delivery mode at that time, so I'm putting her as one of the Carnival point people to plan ideas and recruit people right now and then back out for baby! The other point person can take on the rest of the job as soon as she needs to step back, and I would like this person to be someone who can work via phone or email with Nancy so that she is as comfortable as possible (I need her for 10 more years on the team, you know).

I would love to help with the planning of the rooms. I have a lot of ideas but know I can't do the decorating since I will probably be delivering around this time. Also if you give me some names I don't mind calling some folks to recruit for helpers. Just let me know and I will bring my decorating ideas to the meeting on the 15th. I go Monday to have a sonogram and we will have a better idea of actual target delivery date.

One other thing I think we should ditch the gym as well. I recommend we do the whole thing in the Capernaum building since that is primarily the children's building. I think it gets too confusing when your running from building to building to do different activities and it seperates families from seeing each other as much.

If this is a kid's ministry event then I think there should be games/crafts/activities for all ages up to 5th grade. It isn't fair to exclude the little ones. What about the families with kids in both age groups? Is there a way to either adapt the activities or have different events for the smaller kids downstairs? It's something to think about.

I will probably be in the childcare for K and under group. I will not be at the meeting on Friday because we are going out of town. Let me know how it goes and the most up to date plan.

The K and under sub-committee met Sunday morning and decided on the following activies:

Ghost lollipop craft and ghost footprint craft (both in the art room and centering around the holy ghost/spirit) - Jessica and Mandy

Fishing Joseph out of the well game - Sandy and Bennie

Decorating cupcakes/decorating bags - Carol and all

Face painting (maybe to be done by the youth) - Bennie

Moonwalk - Mandy

Veggie Tales movie from 7:30 - 8pm - Who has the movie and what room will this be in?

Also, we are looking to recruit 5 more helpers to man the activities.

We discussed possibilities for decorations and will meet again to decide.

That's all the updates I have for now. We're pretty excited! (ladies, feel free to add to this if I missed anything)

Thanks,
Mandy

The 1st-5th grade committee met this past week. These are our ideas so far:

Room 207: Daniel and the Lion's Den - Use sun canopy and drape with brown fabric or brown paper for walls, paint glow in the dark eyes and staple/attach to walls, get lion sounds, black paper over windows, make a tunnel (out of choir backdrop things) to get in side den, need black light, use rock painted scenery from youth storage.

Room 205: Esther talks to the King - Painted palace backdrop, throne from youth storage, fake plants/trees, purple and blue fabric. We chose Rm 205 because of the curtains and rug already in that room.

Rm 201: Jonah in the fish's belly -
Profile of a fish at the entry of the door to give the appearance of going into it's mouth. Whale teeth - heads of push brooms, climb up wood platforms (on stage) on their sides to crawl into the mouth, sun canopy for actual belly, large piece of foam and red fabric for tongue (youth storage), cover windows with black paper, swim noodles for the ribs, blue fabric draped from sun canopy, thunder and whale noises, fish smell (open tuna cans), clip lights (youth storage), vines to hang to look like seaweed.

Gathering room: Cemetary/Jesus' Tomb - Black fabric hanging down, cover windows with black paper, black light, white picket fence to mark off cemetary, kids will sit outside cemetary, 12 tombstones made from styrafoam painted gray with white letters, tent for Jesus' tomb, large stone rolled to the side, lanterns (youth storage), dry ice, spooky sounding music.

Holly announced the Fear not Fest in the Family Foundations SS class and got some volunteers for a 2 hour work party on Sunday Oct. 22 after the SS hour. 11:15-1:15
We will provide pizza and lemonade.
Volunteers: Fleming Hanson (set construction), Kathy Hanson (playground duty for kids of volunteers), Debbie Misfeldt (decorating),Kathy Study (Jonah room), Lane Henderson (whatever), Jackie Geyer (whatever), Phil Cummings (story telling/scripts).

Phil also suggested Tim Nibert who does local theater. He may be willing to be a storyteller. Does anyone know Tim or feel comfortable asking him?

I'm sending Kim a list of what we need so that she can make a request for items on the news net.

Sorry this was so long, hope it's helpful.
